Craft Fair
Today
was a very exciting day, because today was the Craft Fair. All of the
farmstayers were happy to finally display their items, we all put in a lot of
effort into making our crafts and we were also happy to see our parents
enjoying themselves, socializing, and buying what we had to offer. The craft
fair was a success; most of our inventory sold and everyone got to see friend
and family once again.

Friday
Today
at the Land School we all woke up around 8:00 to have breakfast. After an hour-long math session we
started community work. There were
a number of jobs that had to be done, including making lunch, making a ski map,
decorating and shelling corn. I
decorated the entryway with some kind of pine décor with Cam. After we had finished hanging this, we
shelled some popcorn. I ended up
shelling so much popcorn that it peeled some of the skin off my thumb. After community work was over, and we
had eaten lunch, we had some Microeconomy time, which we all valued and worked
very hard during, preparing for the event the next morning. We also had a long
deep clean, in preparation for the upcoming event. Then we had some free time and then dinner. After dinner we had more free time, and
finished the night with a movie called Source Code.

Catch a Falling Star
Today we had occupations all morning and the “cooking
science” occupations group made sushi for lunch. Ellis, Amal and I rolled
everyone’s sushi. In the afternoon, we had micro-eco and everyone was rushing
to finish their crafts and finish their food items. Then we played tackle
football in the snow of the A-field and everybody had a great time. For dinner
we had “enchanachos” an interesting combination of enchiladas and nachos. After
dinner we had study hall and because Katie had a dance class, Andy supervised
our studying. Then for a closing he took us outside to see a meteor shower,
which for some people was the first time they had seen a shooting star. While
we were lying in the snow of the A-field some people got snow down their backs
and ET phoned home.

12/12/12!
Today
we woke up and had breakfast. We had bagels and cereal. After breakfast we had
math, which was very productive. We then had science and caught up on genetics,
went to the Bird Blind, and talked about tracking certain animals. We had lunch
after science, which Katie made and we had lasanchiladas, rice, and soup. After
Doug left after lunch we had Micro Economy for three hours and all of the
groups made a lot of progress on their projects. Then we did our chores and
once people were done with their chores we had free time. Tonight it was make
your own dinner night. People made some really good meals. Make your own meal
night is really fun because you can choose anything from the pantry that you
would like to use for your meal. After dinner we had free time for almost an
hour. We then had study hall until 8:30 and had transition time before the
closing of the day. 12/12/12 was a great day! We won’t see a date like that for
another 100 years!

12/11/12
Today
was a regular day. Everyone woke up bright and early for Farm chores and breakfast.
Tired as we were, we got to do math. It is sometimes hard to focus in the morning
but this morning was productive. At 9:30 ish we split up into occupation
groups. Donna’s group made a delish meal of chicken vegetable soup along with
broccoli and homemade mozzarella cheese. Andy’s group worked on the 2013 season
seed inventory. We are counting all the leftover seeds and ordering new ones
for the next years to come. After lunch we had CE/PE (creative and physical
expression) We first snow shoed into the woods and made “earth art” inspired by
Andy Goldsworthy. Then we played broomball with Andy in the driveway. It was
really cold outside but no one seemed to notice because we were having so much
fun. After that, we had daily chores, the usual. Then it was off to Din Din
crew and free time. Tonight was TACO TUESDAY! Yumm! At 7:00 ish we had study
hall, then off to closing and bedtime. It was a regular but fun day!

Monday!!!
Today
we had to get used to the fact that it’s not the weekend anymore. We all tried
to convince Katie to let us have a Land School snow day. The conditions were if
Andy and Donna couldn’t come, we could have a “snow day.” Of course Andy could
come; he doesn’t exactly live far away. Donna was able to come even though
there is almost a foot of snow. We woke up at the normal times for weekdays and
ate breakfast. Then we had math and occupations until lunch. In Donna’s
occupation, we learned about the science of popcorn and did an experiment with
different variations of popcorn under different conditions. We learned how most
recipes for baking are set up. After occupations, we were supposed to have a
Land lunch with our mentor groups, eating the sandwiches we made last night.
Unfortunately, it was like 15 degrees for the high today so we decided to eat
inside. My group, Katie’s mentor group, went outside and built a fort in the
plowed pile of snow just outside the Homestead. We also poured boiling maple
syrup into the snow and ate it with spoons. Katie said we should try it again
next week because we could probably improve it to be more like taffy. I think
the other groups went snowshoeing and went sledding. When it was time to come
inside, we had a Council Meeting. During Micro Economy, my group dragged a lot
of wood over to the Long Barn and worked on our project. Our hands got SO
cold. After a while they felt like
they were going to fall off, so we decided to come back to the Homestead before
we couldn’t hold the saw anymore.

12/10/2012
Today we woke up to the sight of
snow. Everyone was excited for almost one foot of snow after we hadn’t had a
lot of snow this year and the year before. It started with some free time.
People had snacks, read, and did other things. Then we had a tasty brunch of
French toast, eggs, and sausage. Then we got to do what we wanted for the rest
of the day. Most of us went sledding at Strawberry Hill, but some of us made
cookies and played in the snow at the A-field. We had a scrumptious stir fry
dinner. I am writing this during study hall. Everyone is working really hard on
a variety of subjects, (especially math).

Saturday
Yesterday,
on Saturday, we started the day with optional work for credit. We got to choose
if we would work, and if we did, we would get four credits per hour. For the
first hour, there were just a few of us, and we tidied up the greenhouse. We
picked up trash, took the husks off of the dried corn, and threshed sunflower
seeds. While we husked the corn, we would guess the color it would be before we
opened it. After that, we did the part that no one was excited for. We mucked
out the llama pen. Everyone wanted to stop because of the smell. Then, we
cleaned out the chicken coop and winterized it with hay and cardboard to keep
the chickens warm.
We
also had a memorial for Pearl. We buried her at the top of the garden, where
she would always lay while we were harvesting and told stories about her.
In
the afternoon, I went out in the woods and walked. There was a little bit of
snow on the ground from the night before, and the deer were taking refuge on
our land from the doe-hunting season. Just as I finished my walk, I met Katie
at the Farmstead and we turned around and walked Pippa.
In
the morning when I woke up on Sunday, there were three inches of snow on the
ground. Now, there is a foot, and it is still coming down.

Pearl the good girl Photos
At 6:45 on Friday evening, Pearl, the beloved dog of the community, passed from this life. Pearl lived over fifteen years, over half of them at the Land School. She died in her home surrounded by her people. Thank you to everyone who has loved Pearl over the years.
